Shutters

Overview

Shutters are a type of window covering that usually attach to the outside, rather than the inside of the house. They typically completely close over a window or door and protect it, unlike blinds, curtains, and shades, which only protect your interior from the light.

Shutters are a welcome addition to even the most sophisticated window treatment. They give you the option of sealing your house up for safety from storms or even robbers when you're not around. The high tech, automated rollup shutters must be installed professionally. Simple wooden shutters can be found at some home improvement shops like Lowe's, most lumberyards, or you can order them online.

Shutters can be a very expensive option, especially if they are the steel gate style mechanized and/or automated storm gate style shutter. However, simple wood plantation style shutters can be a more cost effective option, with even custom wood shutters costing only around $100 per window.

How to Find the Right Shutters

You should consider shutters if you want to protect your house from weather. Shutters are a great way to protect your windows from weather. There are two primary types of shutter: the kind made of joined metal that securely seal up a building against storms and thieves and the traditional wooden plantation type. The metal shutters offer a more effective protection, balancing the demands of security and also style. Plantation style shutters are not only protective but also decorative and add a certain charm to the outside of your house.

Shutters can work on any style of house, ranging from traditional to sleek and modern. There are different types of window treatments, based on the rigidity of the material used to treat the window and its texture. A soft window treatment can include curtains, draperies, sheer curtains, and may be teamed with hard treatments like blinds or shutters, cloth screens, or even a roller shade. Window treatments can be purely decorative or they can be functional, but typically they are a balance of form and function. Shutters are among the more functional types of window treatment.

The large metal shutters, which are often automated and are typically used by retail outlets and commercial concerns, are not terribly decorative but powerful and sturdy. If you have a beach house, you need them to protect your property from storms, vandals, and thieves when you are not around.
