If you love plants, enjoy being outdoors, and are blessed with a green thumb, then you will probably enjoy spend your free time gardening. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need a huge space for gardening. If you have a backyard you are good to go, and even if you don't, there are other options. One of those options is putting a container garden on your patio.

A few other gardening ideas are planting a vegetable garden for delicious homegrown vegetables. You can even sell them and make a little money. You can also plant a small herbal garden near your kitchen and grow herbs to use for cooking. Or you can make your home look more beautiful with a colorful flower garden in front of it!

Do not worry about cost because you do not have to make a huge investment to own a garden. You just need space, a few tools, seeds, and plenty of patience.

Flower Gardening

If you are planning to have a flower garden in your house, first decide what type of plants you would like to have. A popular choice is annuals like African daisies, dahlias, and sunflowers. They germinate quickly and will start flowering within a few weeks. Another choice is biennials such as fox gloves, Canterbury bells, and hollyhock. They generally bloom in spring and are quite lovely. Perennials are extremely popular because once they start flowering they will continue to do so throughout their lifespan. Some perennials that you can plant are columbines, Shasta daisies, and black-eyed Susans.

Vegetable Gardening

If you are preparing to plant a vegetable garden, there are a few things to consider. Among them are the amount of space available, the type of soil you have, and the climate in your area. The garden space should be sunny and have enough drainage for water. Different types of soil are better for certain vegetables, so it is important to determine what type of soil you have. Finally, if your climate is particularly warm or cold, certain vegetables may be better suited for your environment.

Herb Gardening

Herb gardening is very popular because you can do it all year long, both indoors and outdoors. Some of the common herbs you can grow are basil, chives, mint, thyme, sage, borage, chervil, sweet marjoram, sesame and dill. You can also grow herbs in small pots placed on the window sills of your kitchen.

Organic Gardening

Organic gardening has gained a lot of popularity in the recent years for people who do not want to use chemicals of any kind in their gardens. In organic gardening you can only use organic manure and fertilizers because of the harmful effects of chemicals used in farming. Another positive to organic gardening is vegetables grown organically often taste better than those grown using chemicals.

Container Gardening

The practice of growing plants in containers and pots is called container gardening. The major benefit of container gardening is that you do not need a large area for it. In fact, it is primarily used for growing ornamental plants, although you can also grow herbs, vegetables, and small trees.

Greenhouses

Greenhouses are special structures where you can grow plants. They are usually made of glass, double-wall plastic, film or fiberglass. When you are constructing a green house you should also consider devices for heating, cooling, air circulation, and ventilation. Automated temperature controllers and watering systems can also be installed in greenhouses.

Gardening Tools

Gardening requires a lot of tools. Some of the essential tools are hand hoes, rakes, shovels, spades, hand rakes, dibbers, trowels and bulb planters. You should also have gardening gloves to protect your hands. A watering can or hose is also useful for keeping your garden properly watered.

If you plan to have a large garden you may want to consider constructing a small garden shed. This space can be used to store your gardening tools, supplies, seeds and other materials. They are available in a variety of styles, dimensions, and colors.
