Hot Wing Dips

Spicy Buffalo wings are a super bowl party classic. Instead of serving them with processed, pre-prepared dips, try these easy variations of bleu cheese and buttermilk ranch dips.

Blue Cheese Dip

  • ¾ cup of mayonnaise
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon of finely chopped scallions
  • ½ cup of sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of white vinegar
  • ½ cup of crumbled blue cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Chill for at least one hour before serving.

Buttermilk Ranch Dip

  • 1 cup of mayonnaise
  • ¾ cup of buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup of sour cream
  • ¼ teaspoon of lemon juice
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
  • ½ teaspoon of finely chopped scallions
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours before serving.

Fresh Salsa

  • 3 ripe, red tomatoes, chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh green pepper, finely diced
  • ½ cup of onion, finely diced
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • 3 Serrano chilies, stems and seeds removed, finely chopped
  • 1/3 cup of fresh cilantro, finely chopped
  • 2½ teaspoons of lime juice
  • Pinch of salt
  • Fresh ground pepper to taste

Stir all ingredients together in a bowl and chill for at least an hour before serving.

Creamy Guacamole

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • ½ cup onion, minced
  • ½ cup of fresh sour cream
  • 2 Serrano chilies (more or less to taste), stems and seeds removed, minced
  • 2½ tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon of coarse salt
  • ¼ teaspoon of onion powder
  • A dash of freshly grated black pepper
  • ½ ripe tomato, chopped
  • ¼ cup of salsa, optional
  1. Cut avocados in half and remove pits. Scoop out fruit, spoon into a bowl and mash with a fork.
  2. Mix in other ingredients except for chopped tomato and salsa.
  3. Cover with plastic wrap to prevent oxidation, and chill until ready to serve.
  4. Just before serving, stir in chopped tomato and salsa.
  5. Serve with tortilla chips

A Taste of the Sea

For a nautical touch, include these simple recipes using shrimp, salmon and clams.

Shrimp cocktail sauce

  • ½ cup of ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
  • 1 squirt lemon juice
  • 1 Dash of Worcestershire sauce
  • Pinch of salt
  • One to two pounds of shrimp, cleaned, cooked and chilled.

Combine first five ingredients in a bowl and chill for at least one half hour before serving with cooked, chilled shrimp.

Arctic Salmon Dip

  • 1 can of pink salmon
  • ¼ cup finely chopped onion
  • ¼ cup finely chopped celery
  • 1 8-ounce package of cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and chill for at least three hours before serving with crackers.

Clam Dip

  • 1 can of minced clams, drained (juice reserved)
  • 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup of sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 drops of hot sauce
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced teaspoon minced
  • 2½ teaspoons of lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon of onion powder

Thoroughly mix all ingredients except the clam juice in a serving bowl. If mixture is too thick, gradually add clam juice until dip reaches a good consistency.

Traditional Favorites

These satisfying old favorites have stood the test of time and remain popular from year to year.

French Onion Dip

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1½ cups of onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon of shallots, minced
  • ½ teaspoon of coarse salt
  • 1¾ cups of sour cream
  • ½ cup of mayonnaise
  • ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder
  • Fresh ground black pepper to taste
  1. Sauté onions, shallots and salt in olive oil over medium-low heat, cooking about 20 minutes or until the onions are caramelized.
  2. Remove from heat.
  3. While onion mixture is cooling, combine remaining ingredients and then add the cooled onions.
  4. Refrigerate for at least an hour and stir again before serving.

Quick Spinach Dip

  • 1 package of frozen chopped spinach
  • 1¼ cups of sour cream
  • ¾ cup of mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons of onion soup mix
  • 1 8-ounce package of cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup onion, chopped
  • 1/3 cup grated Romano or Parmesan cheese
  1. Thaw frozen spinach, drain and squeeze out excess liquid.
  2. Combine all ingredients and chill for at least two hours before serving.
  3. Serve with vegetable sticks, crackers or bread cubes.

Dessert Dips

Dips don't have to be only savory. Satisfy your sweet tooth with this rich, chocolaty dessert dips.

Rich Chocolate Peanut Butter dip

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup of creamy peanut butter
  • ½ cup of chocolate syrup
  • 3 tablespoons milk or soymilk
  • ½ teaspoon of vanilla

Combine cream cheese and peanut butter until blended and smooth. Mix in other ingredients. Add milk as needed to reach a good consistency for dipping. Serve with fresh fruit or cookies.

Sweet Mocha Energy Dip

  • 4 ounces of cream cheese
  • 1¼ tablespoons of sugar
  • ½ teaspoon of dry instant coffee
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup of chocolate syrup

Combine all ingredients in blender or food processor. Serve with fresh fruit, cookies or biscotti.
